Does old sermon reveal Rob Bell’s REAL view on hell?

Rob Bell’s promotional video for his new book “Love Wins” ignited a firestorm of controversy online because he seems to imply a universalist view on hell. I wondered (in this blog post) if it was more of a matter of good marketing than bad theology.

Today, I happened upon a five-year old sermon from Rob Bell titled “Love Wins.” Could it offer a clue as to his real view about hell?

Admittedly, I listened to this at work, when I was doing and thinking about other things, so I may have missed out on part of the message… But, I never heard him say “There is no hell” or “Everyone is going to heaven”… What I heard was that there is a universal law, enacted by Christ Himself, that basically says “Love Wins.” Kind of like “Love conquers all…” or something like that. I’m not sure where he wanted to go with that, since it leans heavily on the grace side of things, and he didn’t consider the wrath and judgment of God on sin. But then again, maybe his audience wasn’t the lost. I really don’t know. I should even comment on things I know nothing about…

    What do you think, Dave?
