Mr. Spock sings a hobbit song. Star Trek and LOTR fans worst nightmare!

As Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy was committed to logic. But it seems illogical that he agreed to sing “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” in 1967.  Over the years, I’m sure the Star Trek star “explored new worlds” of embarrassment every time he was reminded of the groovy psychodelic madness of this music video. As if the Moe Howard haircut wasn’t bad enough.

I’ve had my fair share of self-inflicted chagrin too. In hindsight, doing an interpretive dance in the middle of an Italian restaurant was probably ill-considered. That whole “kidnap the pastor on his birthday” stunt didn’t turn out well either.

What about you? Any personal experience with epic embarrassment?

I ripped my pants while playing first base with the church softball team. I had to leave the field with another player covering my backside with her glove. I think they paused while Joe Anderson found me a pair of bright orange board shorts to change into. There was no hiding the fact that I ripped my shorts :/ A year or so later when I was teaching middle school and high school science, my friend (who helped me off the field) told the girls softball team what had happened to me. So all of sudden, my chemistry students were talking about the incident in class.

Which pastor did you kidnap? Jerry? Kennon? Was it your idea?

What’ a couple of broken ribs among friends? Huh?

    Jenn,
I think everyone has their own ripped pants incident, don’t they? Seems like it’s a rite of passage. By the by, the abducted pastor was Jerry.

    Pat,
You saying we shouldn’t stop at “iron sharpening iron?” Move on to iron denting iron?

  4. […] Say, I wonder if they’ll ask Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy to record a new version of groovy musical sensation The Legend of Bilbo Baggins? […]
